The vogue of modern wallpapers in the 1950s ousted plain distempered colours and textile designers could produce colourful creations without fear of rejection.
Their task became more difficult when they had to start thinking of designs that would hang more comfortably against backgrounds that already contained pattern.
My work using today unfashionable materials such as fablon and flock on gesso painted board with acrylic is an attempt to combine these unbalanced designs into one more balanced and symbiotic design.
